The Bergamonte® Story

Discover how Calabria’s distinctive bergamot fruit, traditional botanical use, and modern ingredient science came together to create the clinically studied Bergamonte® portfolio.

Where the Story Begins

The story begins in Calabria, the southern Italian region historically associated with Citrus bergamia Risso. Here, the distinctive yellow-green bergamot fruit thrives in a narrow coastal growing area and has become closely connected to the culture, agriculture, and identity of the region.

Long before bergamot became the subject of modern scientific investigation, its juice was traditionally consumed by local communities. That history ultimately inspired researchers to look more closely at the fruit’s unusual phytochemical composition and its potential applications for human health.

Looking Deeper Into the Bergamot Fruit

Scientific interest in bergamot grew as researchers began examining the juice, albedo, and naturally occurring flavonoids within the fruit. Analysis revealed a distinctive polyphenol profile that included familiar citrus compounds alongside characteristic bergamot constituents such as melitidin and brutieridin. Those findings helped shift bergamot from a traditional botanical into a serious subject of metabolic and cardiovascular research.

Research Milestones

From Early Discovery to Human Clinical Research

Bergamonte® did not become a research platform through a single study. Over time, analytical discoveries, mechanistic investigations, preclinical work, and human clinical trials progressively expanded the understanding of bergamot polyphenols and their potential applications.

Establishing the Scientific Foundation

Early research began by examining the biological activity of bergamot juice and identifying the compounds that could help explain its distinctive effects. Studies explored lipid metabolism, while analytical work identified characteristic bergamot constituents including melitidin and brutieridin and investigated their relationship with HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol metabolism.

This foundational period culminated in the landmark 2011 Fitoterapia publication evaluating standardized Bergamot Polyphenolic Fraction in human participants across cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, LDL, glucose, and vascular measurements. Together, these discoveries transformed bergamot from a traditionally used citrus fruit into a defined botanical worthy of systematic clinical investigation.

2007–2011
Expanding the Cardiometabolic Picture

The next phase of research moved beyond basic cholesterol measurements and began examining the broader cardiometabolic effects of BPF. A 2013 study investigated BPF alone and alongside rosuvastatin, evaluating lipid markers as well as mevalonate, LOX-1, malondialdehyde, and protein kinase B phosphorylation.

Research published in 2014 then extended the investigation into advanced lipoprotein particle profiles, including small dense LDL, as well as glucose, liver enzymes, inflammatory biomarkers, and liver-related measurements in patients with metabolic syndrome. This period was important because it showed that the Bergamonte® science story could not be reduced to a single cholesterol number—it involved interconnected lipid, vascular, metabolic, oxidative, and liver-related pathways.

2013–2014
Broadening the Research Into New Applications

As the clinical program matured, researchers began exploring bergamot polyphenols in more specialized populations and applications. Studies investigated vascular and metabolic outcomes in people with type 2 diabetes, bergamot-containing phytochemical formulations in adults with cardiometabolic risk factors, weight and metabolic measures in patients receiving second-generation antipsychotics, and cognitive performance in an 8-week pilot study.

In 2018, BPF Gold was evaluated in trained cyclists, where researchers measured nitric oxide, endothelial function, maximal oxygen uptake, heart rate, peak power, and metabolic markers. This phase significantly broadened the research platform, connecting bergamot polyphenols with vascular responsiveness, cognition, exercise physiology, and performance in addition to their established cardiometabolic foundation.

2016–2018
Evolving Toward a Full-Spectrum Ingredient Platform

By 2019, the research had progressed from studying concentrated polyphenolic fractions alone to evaluating a broader, pectin-enriched bergamot complex. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, researchers studied two doses of BPE-C over 90 days and measured body weight, BMI, cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose, HOMA-IR, insulin, atherogenic index of plasma, leptin, ghrelin, and adiponectin. The study demonstrated how retaining or incorporating additional components of the bergamot fruit could create a more comprehensive metabolic research story. That evolution helped lay the foundation for today’s broader Bergamonte® portfolio—multiple standardized extracts and specialized ingredient systems developed around different compositions, potency levels, and formulation objectives while remaining rooted in the same Calabrian botanical source and science-first approach.

2019 & Beyond

The Maestro for Cardiometabolic Harmony

A maestro does not create harmony by focusing on a single instrument. The entire orchestra must work together. That idea has long defined the Bergamonte® story. Cardiometabolic wellness is shaped by interconnected systems—including cholesterol and lipid metabolism, glucose regulation, vascular function, cellular energy, liver health, oxidative balance, and healthy weight management. Bergamonte® was developed around the understanding that supporting these pathways together creates a more complete approach than addressing any one marker in isolation.

The metaphor is backed by a growing scientific foundation. Research on Bergamot Polyphenolic Fraction and related Bergamonte® formulations has explored multiple mechanisms, including HMG-CoA reductase, AMPK, phosphodiesterase signaling, cholesterol elimination, oxidative and inflammatory pathways, and cellular renewal. Human studies have also evaluated a wide range of outcomes—from lipids and glucose to endothelial function, liver markers, body composition, cognition, and athletic performance. Together, these interconnected areas of research are what make Bergamonte® the Maestro for Cardiometabolic Harmony.
